Sterling Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions (Clauses 22 to 22F)

Sterling’s Statutory Exemptions & Deferrals page prints the veterans’ clauses as one "$400 to a full tax exemption" range with no per-clause breakdown and asks a year’s residence before entering service, the older one-year test, so this entry gives the statute’s; its veterans’ services are Leominster’s, Cory Hasselmann the officer, with Sterling hours at the Senior Center.

Also called: property tax, clause 22, 22E, veterans exemption, assessors, Sterling.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Sterling grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Board of Assessors’ page names Donlin K. Murray, Eric Newman and Richard Sheppard the members, at One Park Street (978-422-8111, fax 978-422-0289). Its Statutory Exemptions & Deferrals page prints the veterans’ clauses as one line, "Veterans - (Clauses 22, 22 A-F)": "The exemption amounts range from $400 to a full tax exemption, depending upon the disability and the qualifying clause. There are no income or asset limits", filing July 1 to April 1, with the Commonwealth’s own "Veterans - (Clauses 22, 22 A-F)" form linked beside it, and no amount of the town’s own per clause and no acceptance of clause 22I or 22J appears on the site, so the figures here are the statute’s. The page asks that the veteran "must have been a resident of Massachusetts for at least one year before entering the service", the older one-year test, where the statute now asks six months before service or two consecutive years before filing. The Veterans page names Cory Hasselmann the Veteran Service Officer on 978-534-7538 - the officer the EOVS directory’s September 7, 2026 Sterling row lists at 100 West Street, Leominster, on the same number - with the Sterling office at the Senior Center, 36 Muddy Pond Road, hours Monday 9:30 am to 1:30 pm (clerk) and Fridays 8 am to noon (the officer) and the Leominster office’s hours beside, and describes the department’s chapter 115 services with links to EOVS, the VA, the Veterans Benefits Administration and the Veterans’ Employment & Training Service. The town’s annual report names Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189 the town’s post. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Sterling Veterans: Cory Hasselmann, Veteran Service Officer. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
