Staunton Disabled Veteran Vehicle Tax Exemption

Staunton taxes vehicles at $2.90 per $100 on the January JD Power clean trade value, with bills due December 5, and exempts the one vehicle of a qualified disabled veteran.

Also called: car tax, personal property, vehicle tax, Staunton car tax, 100% disabled, TDIU.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Staunton applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption through the Commissioner of the Revenue: one motor vehicle owned by the veteran or the spouse and used primarily by or for a veteran rated 100% service-connected, permanent and total is exempt. The city's personal property page describes the assessment basis - "When assessing vehicles, we use the January National J.D. Power guide. When available, we use the clean trade value from this book" - and gives the city's personal property tax rate as $2.90 per $100. Tax bills are due by December 5 of the current year. The city's pages name no vehicle license fee or decal, and the city code on eCode360 is behind a Cloudflare challenge that no reader passed, so the one-vehicle exemption is recorded from the state entries and the Commissioner's office is the route for the application. A vehicle carrying DMV disabled veteran plates would in any case be free of any 46.2-752 license fee by section 46.2-755(B).

GateRule
100% permanent and totalOne owned motor vehicle used mainly by or for the veteran. Staunton accepts the 100% service-connected, permanent and total test; the city publishes no narrower rule. One path is a VA rating of 100% that is service-connected, permanent, and total.
Permanent and total on the 100% pathThe 100% rating has to be permanent and total. A 100% rating VA has not made permanent does not meet this path.
Individual unemployabilityThe other path is a total disability rating based on individual unemployability that VA has also rated permanent and total.
Permanent and total on the unemployability pathIndividual unemployability qualifies on this path only when VA has rated the disability permanent and total.
