Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

In the City of Staunton the Commissioner of the Revenue, Maggie Ragon, at City Hall, first floor, 116 W. Beverley Street, P.O. Box 4 (540-332-3829, fax 540-851-4022), takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption; office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. The city's tax-relief FAQ describes the elderly and disabled program the Commissioner administers and points disabled veterans to the same office; the city publishes no separate disabled-veteran page, so the state entries govern the documentation. The city's real estate rate history page records the nominal rate at $0.89 in 2023 and 2024 and $0.91 in 2025. The adopted FY2027 budget's revenue page, read live on 2026-10-13, carries the 2026 rate: "Real Estate tax maintained at $0.91 per $1.00 of assessed value." The Assessor's historical-rates page, read live the same day, still ends at 2025. The TY 2025 state table records Staunton at 0.910 / 2.900 / 1.240. Real estate and personal property taxes are due December 5. A veteran who is permanently and totally disabled but does not meet the VA test can use the city's tax relief for the elderly and disabled instead, described in the disability tax relief entry.

Thresholds

Thresholds for Staunton Disabled Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption
GateRule
100% permanent and totalStaunton applies the statewide exemption to the dwelling and up to one acre. It does not add an income test; the city publishes no narrower rule. One path is a VA rating of 100% that is service-connected, permanent, and total.
Permanent and total on the 100% pathThe 100% rating has to be permanent and total. A 100% rating VA has not made permanent does not meet this path.
Individual unemployabilityThe other path is a total disability rating based on individual unemployability that VA has also rated permanent and total.
Permanent and total on the unemployability pathIndividual unemployability qualifies on this path only when VA has rated the disability permanent and total.
