Also called: tax relief, property tax, elderly and disabled, income limit, net worth, May 1.
For: Veteran or service member.
Where it applies
Written for the jurisdictions listed here.
The city's tax-relief FAQ, published by the Commissioner of the Revenue, sets five eligibility requirements: title held or partially held as of January 1; the dwelling occupied as the sole dwelling; the head of the household 65 or older as of December 31 of the preceding year, or permanently and totally disabled as of that date; gross combined income from all sources of the owners and their relatives in the dwelling not over $50,000, with the first $2,500 of each non-spouse relative's income excluded; and net combined financial worth of the owner and spouse, including equitable interests but not the dwelling and up to one acre, not over $80,000 as of December 31.
The exemption is a percentage of the real estate tax: 100% where gross combined income is $0 to $27,500 and net worth is $80,000 or less; 75% from $27,501 to $35,000; 50% from $35,001 to $42,500; 25% from $42,501 to $50,000; and nothing where net worth exceeds $80,000. The application is filed at the Commissioner's office on the first floor of City Hall, 116 W. Beverley Street, or downloaded, and "the deadline to apply is May 1"; details are at 540-332-3829.
It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use it.
