How it got there. In January 2025 the Board approved a work authorization with Song + Associates, Inc. for architectural design, permitting, bidding assistance and construction administration for the Veterans Homeless Shelter project; signed plans arrived in September 2025 and an Invitation to Bid issued November 2, 2025. Bids opened January 14, 2026, and on February 17, 2026 the Board awarded Bid No. 25-076 by consent vote to FSV Construction Company, the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, at a total project cost of $817,259.56, covering the base bid, a ten percent contingency, a permit allowance, the public construction bond and selected alternates. The contract was executed March 16, 2026, required work to begin within ten calendar days, and carried a contractual completion date of September 17, 2026. Commissioner Cathy Townsend noted at the award that the additional $800,000 brought total renovations at the shelter to about $4 million and asked what a well and ADA compliance still required.
What it will offer. The county's 2026 Homeless Advisory Committee report describes the plan: 13 non-congregate shelter beds for veterans experiencing homelessness, in units with private bathrooms, with meals, wrap-around services, case management, transportation, a Veteran Service Officer available, and housing financial support to help residents move to stable housing.
In the meantime. The Housing Hub, the county-funded 24-bed shelter operated by the Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, serves unaccompanied adults including veterans; the county's fiscal 2026 funding agreement with the Council is $600,000, and the City of Fort Pierce adds $125,000 under an interlocal agreement. The 2026 report counts 31 veterans receiving shelter assistance at the Hub since the programme began, and records a resident who reached a HUD-VASH voucher and a furnished apartment after 167 days. A homeless veteran should also call Veteran Services (772-337-5670) and VA's National Call Center for Homeless Veterans (877-424-3838).
