The St. Louis County Recorder of Deeds records a DD-214 free and gives free copies of discharges recorded there since 1999. Its page says copies are free to the veteran or surviving spouse, where State law makes them free to every authorized party. The Recorder also offers county veterans the Honor Rewards discount programme.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, Recorder of Deeds, discharge papers, Honor Rewards, veteran discount, 59.480, Clayton.

For: Veteran or service member, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The duty is the State's; see the Missouri entry on section 59.480. The Recorder of Deeds is at 41 South Central Avenue, Clayton 63105, [email protected]. Recording. The Recorder's Honor Rewards page says a St. Louis County veteran's "DD-214 may be recorded by the St. Louis County Recorder of Deeds free of charge." Section 59.480.2 makes that a duty, not an option, and it is not limited to county residents. Copies. The Military Discharge Requests page says copies can be provided only for discharges recorded in St. Louis County "between 1999 to present", that recorded discharges are restricted from public search and are not available for genealogy, and that a copy is "provided to a veteran or surviving spouse at no cost". Requesters must show a driver's licence or ID whose name and address match the request form, which is the Recorders Association of Missouri form, returned by email, mail or in person. Where the page narrows the statute. Section 59.480.6 forbids any fee for a certified or uncertified copy to any authorized party, which includes a representative with written authority, an executor, a funeral director or a government agency helping with a benefit claim, not only the veteran or surviving spouse; it also forbids charging to notarise the request. Section 59.480.7 makes discharge images more than seventy-five years old open records, so the page's flat "not available for genealogy" is too broad for older records the office holds. Honor Rewards. A veteran who lives in St. Louis County can enrol in Honor Rewards, a discount programme offered through local recorder of deeds offices, on the programme's own website. The Recorder's page lists participating local businesses and their offers, mostly 5 to 20 percent off; the list changes without notice and the current one is on honorrewards.com.
