Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Michigan requires every county to pay at least $300 toward the burial of a qualifying wartime veteran, or the veteran's spouse or surviving spouse (MCL 35.801; see the Michigan entry on the county burial allowance). St. Clair County pays more: "At the time of application, $1,000.00 may be payable to the funeral home if the bill is unpaid. If the funeral expenses are paid-in-full, then the payee, $600.00 may be reimbursed." The county's check registers carry the county side of it: each burial is two cheques, $300 from the general fund's Veterans' Burial account (101681) and $700 from the veterans millage fund's account 7195, monthly through 2025 and 2026, to claimants and to Jowett, Pollock-Randall, KC and other funeral homes. Who qualifies, by the department's page. Ninety days of active service during a wartime era, an estate at death not exceeding $40,000, residence in St. Clair County at death, and an application within two years of the death. Bring the funeral bill marked paid or unpaid, the DD-214 and the death certificate, to the Department of Veterans Affairs at 200 Grand River Avenue, Suite 104, Port Huron, 810-989-6945, or to the veterans office of the county where the veteran lived. One condition from the page. "If the deceased did not leave a dependent surviving, but did leave an estate sufficient to meet lawful claims, including burial expenses, then the $300.00 will not be paid." That is narrower than the statute, which pays from an estate under $40,000; a family in that position should apply and cite section 35.801. The Veterans Memorial Service detail of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council provides military funeral honours on request through the funeral home.
