Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of Springfield grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The assessors’ green form for clauses 22 to 22E, the latest they post (fiscal 2025), sets out each clause as the greater of a valuation amount or a tax amount: $2,000 or $400 under clause 22, $4,000 or $750 under 22A, $8,000 or $1,250 under 22B, $10,000 or $1,500 under 22C and $6,000 or $1,000 under 22E, with full exemption under 22D and for a paraplegic veteran under G.L. c. 58, s. 8A. Where the home has more than one unit, 22A to 22E reach only the share the veteran occupies. The form asks for six months’ Massachusetts domicile before entering service or two consecutive years before filing, which is what the statute now says. News reports in late 2024 said the City Council voted 11-0 to double the veteran exemptions under the HERO Act. The council’s own record was not found online and the assessors have posted no form for fiscal 2026 or 2027, so this entry does not rest on the reports; ask the assessors for the current amount. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Springfield Department of Veterans’ Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
