Spokane County District Court runs the Veterans Enhanced Treatment Court with the VA, the Public Defender, the Prosecutor, Probation and the Spokane Veterans Forum, in the Public Safety Building, 1100 W. Mallon Avenue, second floor (509-477-2924). Who. Former or current members of the armed forces, Guard or reserves; "As a former member, the Veteran must have been Honorably discharged or discharged 'Generally' under honorable conditions." The court "may accept" a person with a VA-confirmed military service-related diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury or military sexual trauma, and gives combat veterans, as VA's handbook defines them, priority. No Washington statute sets a discharge test for veterans courts (chapter 2.30 RCW leaves eligibility to each court), so the discharge and diagnosis limits are the court's own. They are narrower than King County's court, which takes any veteran eligible for VA health care. Cases. Only Spokane County misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors, after review by the team; a felony reduced and pled in District Court may be referred for probation monitoring. Any prior conviction for a serious violent offence or a sex offence excludes. How it works. Four phases: orientation (2 months) and intensive treatment (4 months) with court twice a month; transition (4 months) with monthly court and work, school or volunteering; then aftercare of 2 months to a year. Throughout: random testing, treatment, medication as prescribed, weekly mentor contact, the monthly Veterans Forum, a payment plan for court fees, and no new offences. Ask your lawyer or the Therapeutic Courts Coordinator (509-477-2283) about referral.
