Southbury’s Veterans’ Tax Exemption Programs page describes three programs. The state-mandated recognition program gives 732 qualifying veterans and surviving spouses a $1,500 exemption of the assessed value of a home or automobile, without an income restriction, which the page values at $36.30 of 2025 tax per person. The state-mandated need-based program under C.G.S. 12-81g gives a $3,000 exemption to veterans and surviving spouses with income at or below $55,100 married or $45,200 single. The statutory recognition amount is $1,000 under 12-81(19) in the 2026 Supplement; the page prints $1,500. Ask the assessor. The local option need-based program gives 116 veterans and surviving spouses a $15,000 exemption for income at or below $61,800 married or $53,400 single. Code §§ 16-31 to 16-35, adopted October 15, 2020, give a veteran eligible under 12-81(19), and a surviving spouse eligible under 12-81(22), an additional $15,000 exemption, for income not more than the 12-81l amount or a town-set amount not less than it, filed by the assessment date and refiled biennially. OLR’s 2023 survey recorded Southbury as offering no municipal option at all, two years after the ordinance. Ask the assessor. A veteran rated permanently and totally disabled at 100 percent files form D-2 annually, received by the Assessor’s Office by January 1, from the October 1, 2025 grand list; the page cites Public Act 24-46 and Public Act 25-168 and asks for a current VA award letter.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
