Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Korea, in Busan, is the only UN memorial cemetery in the world. Its burial rules come from the 1959 agreement between the United Nations and the Republic of Korea that established it, and from decisions of the Commission for the cemetery. The 1959 agreement covers anyone who died while serving under the UN Command in Korea, or with the United Nations or one of its organs in Korea. The Commission has added four groups, and the first is the one that reaches living veterans: Veterans of the Korean War. Spouses of Korean War veterans interred at the cemetery, to be interred together. Spouses of soldiers who died in the Korean War and are interred at the cemetery, to be interred together. Siblings of soldiers interred at the cemetery who also served in the Korean War, to be interred together. How to apply. The cemetery's page says to contact your nation's embassy in South Korea, which will assist with the application. For a U.S. veteran that is the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. The criteria do not define "veteran of the Korean War" by dates, and the cemetery decides each application. A family planning for this should start with the embassy well before it is needed, since the remains have to be brought to Busan. VA burial benefits, such as a burial allowance or a government headstone or marker, follow their own federal rules and are not decided by the cemetery. The cemetery is at 93 UN Pyeonghwa-ro, Nam-gu, Busan; phone +82-51-625-0625, email [email protected]. Admission is free and it is open every day.
