Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The City of Somerville grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a city can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Board of Assessors’ 22, 22A-F Veterans Exemption Instructions for fiscal 2027 print $411 under clause 22 (a 10 percent disability or a Purple Heart), $770 under 22A, $1,284 under 22B, $1,541 under 22C, the full real estate taxes under 22D and 22F, and $1,027 under 22E: the statutes raised by the fiscal 2027 adjustment of 2.7 per cent alone, clause 22I’s, with neither year’s adjustment compounding. As at Lowell, that suggests the acceptance first applies in fiscal 2027; no vote was found in the city’s online records, so ask the assessors to confirm the acceptance. The instructions ask applicants to be Massachusetts residents six months before service or to have five years’ Massachusetts residency before July 1, 2026, the older five-years wording, where the statute now asks two consecutive years before filing. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Somerville Veterans’ Services: Jerome Thomas, Director. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
