Somerset Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions (Clauses 22 to 22F)

Somerset posts the state’s generic veteran exemption form and no amount of its own, so this entry gives the statute’s: $400 for a veteran rated 10 percent or more, and full exemption under 22D and 22F.

Also called: property tax, clause 22, 22E, veterans exemption, assessors, Somerset.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Somerset grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors Office’s applications-and-forms page posts the state’s Veteran Exemption form (State Tax Form 96-4) among its exemption applications, and no amount of its own; the figures here are the statute’s, and no clause 22I or 22J acceptance was found on the town’s site or in its records. The town’s site has moved from town.somerset.ma.us, which no longer resolves, to townofsomerset.org. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Somerset Veterans’ Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
