Skagit County Assessor: Senior, Disabled and Disabled Veteran Exemption
The Skagit County Assessor's page already gives the 2027 rules: a veteran rated 40% or more, or paid at the 100% rate, qualifies at any age with combined disposable income of $78,000 or less, in three tiers ($58,000, $68,000, $78,000), with VA compensation, DIC and from 2027 Combat-Related Special Compensation left out of income. No deadline; up to three prior years.
Also called: property tax, assessor, 84.36.381, senior exemption, disabled veteran exemption, 40 percent, combined disposable income, deferral, value freeze, Mount Vernon, Burlington, Anacortes, Sedro-Woolley, Concrete, La Conner.
The exemption is the State's; the Washington entry explains it. The Skagit County Assessor administers it from 700 South 2nd Street, Room 204, Mount Vernon (360-416-1780), with an online application in English and Spanish, a screening tool and a paper form.
The veteran route. "Veterans can qualify at any age. Beginning January 1, 2027, a veteran qualifies with a VA service-connected disability rating of 40 percent or higher, down from 80 percent. Veterans receiving VA compensation at the 100 percent rate also qualify." The household must be under the county income limit, but "many VA payments do not count as income": VA disability compensation, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, VA attendant-care and medical-aid payments, and from 2027 Combat-Related Special Compensation. Include the VA award letter.
2027 benefits in Skagit County. Combined disposable income of $58,000 or less exempts excess levies, the state school levy and local regular levies on the greater of $80,000 or 80% of the home's value; $58,001 to $68,000 exempts them on the greater of $70,000 or 45%, up to $200,000; and $68,001 to $78,000 exempts excess levies and the state school levy. At every level the home's taxable value is frozen at its assessed value on January 1 of the first qualifying year. These limits apply to taxes payable 2027 to 2029; a standard deduction of $7,500 a person, or actual qualifying expenses, comes off income.
When. "No deadline. Apply for this year and up to three prior years." Each prior year is judged by its own, lower limits: for taxes payable 2024 to 2026 the Skagit tiers were $34,000, $41,000 and $48,000, and a veteran needed an 80% rating. The State's deferral programmes are on the Assessor's deferral page.
