Shirley Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions (Clauses 22 to 22F)

Shirley’s assessors’ own fiscal 2027 statutory exemptions sheet prints the veterans’ clauses as one range, "$400.00 to a full tax exemption depending upon the disability and qualifying clause", with no option adopted, so this entry gives the statute’s; its Veteran’s Services is the town’s own, Mike Detillion the Veteran’s Agent, where the EOVS directory’s row gives the Ayer office’s phone.

Also called: property tax, clause 22, 22E, veterans exemption, assessors, Shirley.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Shirley grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The Assessors Office names Jennifer Wilson, MAA, the Principal Assessor and Tracy Largey the Assessing Clerk, at 7 Keady Way (978-425-2600, extension 220), open Monday 7:30 am to 6 pm and Tuesday to Thursday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, and prints the fiscal 2026 single tax rate of $12.39. The department’s Personal Statutory Exemptions page posts the town’s own "FY2027 Available Exemptions" sheet: the veterans’ clauses are one line, "Veterans - (Clauses 22, 22 A-F)", whose "exemption amounts range from $400.00 to a full tax exemption depending upon the disability and qualifying clause", with no income or asset limits, filing July 1 to April 1, and no amount of the town’s own per clause and no acceptance of clause 22I or 22J appears on the site, so the figures here are the statute’s. The sheet asks that the veteran "must have been a resident of Massachusetts for at least one year before entering the service", the older one-year test, where the statute now asks six months before service or two consecutive years before filing; the site’s veterans’ work-off is the sheet’s "Senior Work Off" at 60 and over, up to $1,500.00 a year (ATM 5/13/19), not a veterans’ work-off. The town’s Veteran’s Services page names Mike Detillion the Veteran’s Agent at 7 Keady Way, First Floor (978-425-2600, extension 280, fax 978-425-2681), where the EOVS directory’s September 7, 2026 Shirley row lists him on the same street on the Ayer office’s (978) 456-6848 - Detillion is Ayer’s agent too, as the Ayer entry records. The page describes the department’s chapter 115 work - serving "veterans and their dependents that qualify for Chapter 115 (Welfare for Veterans)", with "assistance in preparation of claims for compensation and pension, medical care and fuel assistance" - and links the town’s Veterans’ Real Estate Tax Exemptions back to the Assessors Office, which publishes no amount of its own. The War Memorial Trustees’ page says the War Memorial Building at 8 Church Street "is home to Shirley’s local American Legion post" - American Legion Post 183, the post the Veteran’s Services page links - and for the Legion or its function hall gives 978-425-4888; the town’s Veterans Events Committee and the Veterans Row and its granite posts along Front Street are the town’s own observances, the posts’ plaques displayed inside the post. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Shirley Veteran’s Services: Mike Detillion, Veteran’s Agent. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
