Sheridan County Veterans Aid Fund

What the page says. The Veteran Benefits page calls the CVA fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, applied for through the Sheridan County office; the veteran "must demonstrate an 'inability'" to pay. The test it prints is out of date. The page limits the fund to veterans who "received an Honorable Discharge, and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'". LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime-service test from section 80-102, which now reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. A peacetime veteran, or one with a general discharge, should apply anyway. What the fund pays. Fund 1900 levies no tax. It held $13,412.68 on July 1, 2023 and paid $200.00 of rent and fuel aid in 2023-2024, then $393.70 in 2024-2025 ($125.27 medical, $268.43 rent and fuel), leaving $12,868.98. The 2025-2026 budget sets $1,800.00 for medical and hospital aid, $800.00 each for emergency relief, provisions and clothing, and rent and fuel, $950.00 for personal supplies and $5,718.98 for county burials, beside the $25,000.00 transport grant pass-through (see the transportation entry). The Treasurer's statements show $2,000.00 paid out in May 2026 and the fund at $47,901.16 on June 30, 2026 and $53,610.66 on September 30, 2026, nearly all of the growth the transport grant. Apply through the Veterans Service Office, (308) 327-5658; see the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
