Shelby County Auditor: the Disabled Veteran Homestead Exemption ($58,000 for 2026, $500 to $800 a Year)
The Shelby County Auditor takes the disabled veteran homestead exemption on Form DTE 105I for an honorably discharged veteran rated 100% service-connected (or paid at 100% for individual unemployability) and the surviving spouse: a credit equal to the tax on $56,000 of true value in 2025 and $58,000 in 2026, which the Auditor puts at $500 to $800 a year in Shelby County, with no income limit; file by December 31.
Also called: Auditor, homestead exemption, disabled veteran, DTE 105I, DTE 105A, DTE 105E, $58,000, $56,000, 100% disabled, individual unemployability, surviving spouse, House Bill 85, Sidney, Anna, Botkins, Fort Loramie, Jackson Center, Russia, Kettlersville, Lockington, Port Jefferson.
The Auditor's page. "Am Sub House Bill 85, effective September 11, 2014 created an additional classification for recipients who are veterans experiencing service-connected disabilities and their qualifying spouses. The reduction for veterans qualifying for this new classification is equal to the taxes that would otherwise be charged on up to $58,000 of the market value of an eligible taxpayer's homestead."
Who qualifies. "To receive the homestead exemption as a disabled veteran you must: Have been discharged or released from active duty. Be determined to have a total service-related disability or be receiving compensation for a service-related disability at a level of 100% following a determination of individual unemployability by the Department of Veteran's Affairs ... Have been discharged or released under honorable conditions. Own and have occupied your home as your principal place of residence on January 1 of the year in which you file the application." A surviving spouse keeps it if the veteran was receiving it in the year of death, occupied the home then and owns it, "until the year following the year in which the surviving spouse remarries". "Disabled veterans who meet the disability requirements do not need to meet the income threshold."
What it is worth here. "The benefit for eligible applicants that are Disabled Veterans and their Surviving Spouses is a tax credit equal to the amount of tax on $56,000 of the 'true value' appraisal of the home. The amount is adjusted annually. In 2026 the values increase to $29,000 and $58,000" - and "The savings for qualified applicants who are Disabled Veterans and their Surviving Spouses is $500 to $800 per year ($250 to $400 per half)" in Shelby County. The Auditor's front page adds: "Also note that 100% Disabled Veterans receive a larger exemption, but we don't know about you unless you tell us!"
How to file. Form DTE 105I, "Homestead Exemption Application for Disabled Veterans and their Surviving Spouses", with the Auditor "anytime on or before December 31st of the year for which the reduction is sought"; once on the programme you need not reapply, and an approved exemption shows on the January tax bill. See the Ohio entry for the statute.
