Shelby County Property Tax and Exemptions

Shelby County takes the State homestead and disability exemption claims at its Property Tax Office in Columbiana; a live read of the county site found no exemption page of its own and a bare record-search portal in place of a revenue site.

Also called: property tax, homestead, revenue, ad valorem, disability exemption.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The State exemptions are the substance here: Code section 40-9-21's complete exemption for a person permanently and totally disabled on the principal residence and up to 160 acres, and section 40-9-19's routes, as the State's principal-residence entries explain. In Shelby County the claims are taken by the county's Property Tax Office, 102 Depot St., Columbiana, 205-670-6900. The county's own site, shelbyal.com, was read whole on the October 12, 2026 re-read after the failed October 8 sweep: it publishes no exemption text of its own - no homestead, disability or veteran exemption page in its navigation or its 312-page sitemap - and its Property Tax Commissioner link is the bare E-Ring Citizen Access Portal (ptc.shelbyal.com), a property-record search with no exemption text. The Department of Revenue's county-office page, which gives the Property Tax Office's address, names no separate revenue-commission website for Shelby. A Shelby County claimant should call the Property Tax Office before filing and ask what proof it wants, taking the State's forms and the VA letter.
