The Shasta County Veterans Services Office is the county veterans service office California counties run under Military and Veterans Code section 970; see the California entry. Its representatives are accredited by VA and are county employees, not federal ones.
What County Code requires. Section 2.12.100 (Ordinance 2022-10, enacted December 13, 2022) places veterans services in the county administrative office and requires a county veterans service officer who "shall be a veteran", appointed by and serving at the pleasure of the county executive officer, to assist "every veteran of any war of the United States and the dependents of every deceased veteran in presenting and pursuing any claim".
What it does. Comprehensive benefits counselling; claims preparation, submission and follow-up to make sure decisions are fully and correctly adjudicated; appeals from the start; and advocacy with federal, State and local agencies. Its representatives file compensation claims and reopeners, survivors and widow benefits (assessed for housebound and aid and attendance), the nonservice-connected pension for war-era veterans, requests for DD-214s, medals and certificates, discharge upgrades and corrections of military records, vocational rehabilitation, and every CalVet College Fee Waiver. It partners with the Health and Human Services Agency's CalWORKs and mental health programmes, counsels on CalVet home loans and VA health care, and works with county housing on the HUD-VASH programme and with Nations Finest.
Veteran homelessness. On May 13, 2025 the Board discussed ending veteran homelessness, declined 4-1 to adopt a resolution committing the county to functional zero by June 2028, and instead directed the County Executive Officer to work with the county's veterans organizations. On July 16, 2025 the Veterans Service Office and the agency presented the Veteran Homelessness Collaboration Project, and the Board put $94,197 each into the Alcohol and Drug Programs and opioid settlement budgets and added an Alcohol and Drug Counselor I/II position. The Veterans Service Officer and the agency director presented on veteran homelessness again on January 20 and August 25, 2026.
When and where. 1855 Shasta Street, Redding 96001; phone 530-225-5616, fax 530-245-6454; Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. The office publishes a quarterly veterans newsletter and a veteran-friendly business list, and keeps the CalVet Resource Book.
