What it is. An Arkansas county veterans service officer is employed by the county judge and paid from the Quorum Court's budget, trained and accredited through the Department of Veterans Affairs, and partly reimbursed by the State under section 20-81-106: one dollar for every two the county spends, up to $3,600 a year, or $4,800 in a county with more than 2,500 veterans, plus $500 a quarter each for VA accreditation and for access to VA's benefits system; see the Arkansas entry on the Department and county service officers. Help with a claim is free. The county's page lists help with compensation and pension, health care, education and training, employment, burial and survivor benefits, housing, transportation and military records. Who and when. The county's Veteran Services page: "Office Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Phone Number: 870-642-6622, Fax Number: 870-484-4855", with Kenneth Harris, a retired 20-year Army veteran who took the post in October 2018 and finished his VA certifications that December. The Department of Veterans Affairs' county finder (last updated August 19, 2026) lists Ken Harris at 115 N. 3rd St., Rm. 116, DeQueen, AR 71832, (870) 642-6622, [email protected], but with hours of Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; call before going in. Sevier is in the Department's District 4, whose District Veterans Service Officer is Eric Siddons in the Fort Smith courthouse, (479) 966-5295. The County Judge, Sandra Dunn, is at the same courthouse, 870-642-2425. The money. The Quorum Court's appropriation ordinance for 2024, signed December 11, 2023 (its number is illegible on the posted scan), adopting the "2024 Annual Budget, Sevier County, Arkansas" by reference, appropriates $17,844 for "VSO" in the General Fund, with the officer's part-time salary at $11,239 ($14.00 an hour). The 2023 budget's department 0800, Veteran's Service, came to $18,427 (salary $10,912; supplies, phone, internet, travel, advertising and a $1,500 equipment line). No later budget is posted. The veterans court. None: the Ninth West Circuit's plan for 2026 says its only specialty docket is a drug court, and the Judiciary's veterans treatment court map does not shade Sevier.
