Scott County Taxation: Veterans with a Disability Exclusion
Scott County's Taxation office takes the State's homestead market value exclusion for veterans rated 70% or more, their surviving spouses and primary family caregivers by December 31 for the next year's taxes, with a VA letter confirming discharge and disability; the Veterans Service office verifies a 70% to 90% rating each year.
Also called: market value exclusion, 273.13, homestead, surviving spouse, caregiver, Shakopee, December 31, $150,000, $300,000.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, caregiver, survivor.
The exclusion is the State's (section 273.13, subdivision 34); the Minnesota entries explain the levels and the surviving spouse and caregiver routes. Scott County's page lists up to $150,000 of market value excluded for a 70% to 100% rating and up to $300,000 for a total and permanent rating or individual unemployability, for qualifying surviving spouses, and for the surviving spouse of a service member who dies on active duty.
How. The county posts three applications: for a veteran with a disability, for a primary family caregiver, and for a surviving spouse. "In addition to the completed application, you must also attach a letter from the Veteran's Administration, confirming both honorable discharge and disability status." "Applications must be made by December 31st to qualify for the exclusion on the current year's market value for taxes payable next year."
Keeping it. "If you are receiving the Veterans with Disability Exclusion you do not need to reapply after the initial approval, so long as you are registered with the Scott County Veterans Office and they are able to verify your status." The Veterans Service page adds that a 70% or higher rating "will be verified by VSO each year". Tell the office if the rating changes or the veteran dies.
