Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The Town of Scituate grants the veterans’ exemptions of G.L. c. 59, s. 5, clauses 22 to 22F, through its board of assessors. The statute sets them as dollars off the tax bill, $400 under clause 22, $750, $1,250 and $1,500 under 22A to 22C and $1,000 under 22E, and exempts the whole domicile under 22D and 22F; a town can add to them only by accepting a local option, clause 22I, clause 22J or section 5C½. Every figure on this entry carries its source and the day it was read. The assessors’ fiscal 2026 overview of exemptions, a senior center presentation by then-Director of Assessing Joe DiVito Jr., prints $800 under clause 22 (a 10 percent service-related disability or a Purple Heart), $1,500 under 22A, $2,500 under 22B, $3,000 under 22C and $2,000 under 22E, with full exemption under 22D, for a paraplegic veteran and under 22H. Each is the statutory amount doubled, which is clause 22J at 100 per cent. But the same presentation prints 41C at $1,000, doubled, and 37A left at its statute’s $500, a mix no option named in the section produces uniformly; the presentation names no clause, and no town meeting vote was found in the town’s online records, so ask the assessors to confirm. The presentation asks that the veteran have lived in Scituate for one year and have owned the home by July 1, a test of its own beside the statute’s Massachusetts residence requirement. Chapter 115 benefits, the Commonwealth’s needs-based help with rent, food, fuel and medical costs, are applied for through Scituate Veterans Services: Joshua Summers, Director of Veteran Services. Their amounts are set by the Commonwealth and are the same in every city and town; the statewide chapter 115 entry describes them.

GateRule
A VA rating, a decoration, or a surviving relativeClause 22 reaches a veteran rated 10 percent or more, a Purple Heart recipient, a Gold Star parent and the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse; 22A to 22E turn on named losses, decorations, a 100 percent rating or specially adapted housing. The rating filter does not hide this entry, because several routes need no rating.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
