Saratoga County Veterans Property Tax Exemptions

Against County taxes, Saratoga grants the alternative veterans exemption and a permanent Cold War exemption, and from Local Law 5 of 2026 fully exempts the home of a veteran the VA considers permanently and totally disabled, first on the 2028 tax roll. The County publishes no ceilings for the alternative exemption.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

These are the State exemptions in Real Property Tax Law 458-a and 458-b; see the New York entries. Saratoga County does not assess property; its 19 towns and two cities do, and the County's local laws set the exemption only for the County tax. Each town, city and school district decides for its own, so ask the assessor what applies to each line of the bill. Alternative veterans exemption (458-a). The County grants it: the county's own fact sheet on the 2026 law says the same RP-458-a or RP-458-a-Dis forms now used for the alternative veterans exemption will be used for the full exemption. The County's ceilings are not published - the county's online local-law archive reaches only to 2011 and no law there sets them, and the Real Property Tax Service pages defer to the State's pages - so ask your assessor what the County's figures are for your roll. Cold War exemption (458-b). Local Law 3 of 2008 adopted it and Local Law 6 of 2017 removed the ten-year limit, so it lasts as long as the owner qualifies. The 2008 law itself is not posted, so its percentage and ceiling could not be read; ask the assessor. The full exemption (458-a(11)). Local Law 5 of 2026, introduced by Resolution 235 of August 18, 2026, heard on September 9, 2026 and adopted by Resolution 279 at the September 15, 2026 meeting, adopts the exemption for the primary residence of a qualifying owner who is an eligible wartime veteran - an expeditionary medal may qualify - with either a 100% permanent and total disability compensation rating from the VA, or a total disability due to unemployability designation together with a permanent and total designation. It exempts the home fully from County tax, together with special district charges, assessments and special ad valorem levies to the extent 458-a(11) allows; it does not touch city, town, village, special district or school taxes unless they adopt it too. Use the usual RP-458-a or RP-458-a-Dis form with the local assessor, who may ask veterans to reapply with updated documentation. The county's fact sheet says the exemption will first be applied to the 2028 taxes, the State law taking effect for rolls with taxable status dates on or after October 1, 2026. How to apply. File with your town or city assessor by the taxable status date, usually March 1. The Veterans Service Agency at 518-884-4115 helps veterans get VA documentation.
