The Office of Veterans Services is the county veterans service office that California counties run under Military and Veterans Code section 970; see the California entry. The county says it was established in 1944 and is funded by the County and the State. County Code section A18-54 places it in the Social Services Agency and requires the Veteran's Service Officer to be a veteran, to help every veteran and dependent with any claim against the United States arising from military service, and to act as a notary for veterans' affairs without charging a fee.
What it does. Its accredited representatives help veterans, service members, spouses, surviving spouses, dependent children and dependent parents with VA compensation, pension and survivors' claims, VA health care enrolment, vocational rehabilitation, home loans, the GI Bill, life insurance, records and decoration requests, discharge upgrades, CHAMPVA, the State veterans homes and the CalVet College Fee Waiver. It refers suicide prevention, county social services and homeless programmes to other agencies.
When and where. 68 North Winchester Boulevard, Santa Clara 95050, Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (4:30 on Tuesdays).
