Where it applies

The exemptions are State law (35 ILCS 200/15-169 and 15-165); the Illinois entries explain the bands. Sangamon County's exemptions page states them in its own words. Standard exemption. The owner must be an Illinois resident who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Illinois National Guard or Reserve and was not dishonourably discharged, with "at least a 30% service-connected disability certified by the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs effective on December 31 of the application year". "A copy of the documentation of disability from the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs and form DD 214 are required to be filed with the application. This exemption reduces the taxable assessed value by either; total exemption from taxes for at least 70% service-connected disability; $5,000 for at least a 50% but less than 70% service-connected disability or a reduction of $2,500 for at least a 30% but less than 50% service-connected disability." The page links an application and an annual renewal form. Specially adapted housing. "Application for this exemption is made through the IL Department of Veterans Affairs... Property owned and occupied exclusively by a disabled veteran, the spouse or unmarried surviving spouse of the veteran, assessed up to an amount of $100,000 is exempt." Read the page with care. It still says the home must have "an EAV of less than $250,000" and that application "shall be made by January 31 of the tax year"; both lines predate the current statute, so ask the office for this year's deadline before relying on them. A person who claims one of the veterans' exemptions cannot also take the other or the Disabled Persons' Homestead Exemption.
