Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

San Mateo County Ordinance Code chapter 5.08 requires a licence to peddle or solicit in the unincorporated county, issued after fingerprinting and an investigation, for six months at $12. Section 5.08.110(2), last amended in 1987, says the fee provisions "do not apply to self-employed veterans of U.S. Military service". Wider than the State law. Business and Professions Code section 16102 frees an honorably discharged veteran, or one released from active duty under honorable conditions, who sells goods the veteran owns; see the California entry. The county section reaches any self-employed veteran and names no character of discharge, and it is not limited to goods the veteran owns, so a solicitor taking orders qualifies too. What it does not do. The licence, the fingerprints and the investigation are still required, and the exemption is from this chapter's fee only. Inside a city, the city's own licence applies.
