San Francisco Muni Discount and Free Fares for Veterans Rated 50%
A VA rating of 50% or more, or aid and attendance, qualifies a veteran for the Clipper Access disability card, which gives discount Muni fares and the $43 discount monthly pass. A San Francisco resident with that card and household income at or below the Bay Area median rides Muni free.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency runs two fare programmes a disabled veteran can use.
Discount fares. People with disabilities pay Muni's discount fare and can buy the discount monthly pass, $43 on Clipper, valid on cable cars too. They first need a Clipper Access card (formerly the RTC card), the Bay Area's regional disability transit card, issued in San Francisco at the SFMTA Clipper Access Discount ID Office, 11 South Van Ness Avenue. SFMTA accepts as proof of disability a VA service-connected disability ID card with a VA letter showing a service-connected rating of 50% or higher or a rating for aid and attendance. SFMTA warns VA verification can take several months and suggests its medical eligibility form for a faster answer; a veteran rated below 50% can use that form too, if the disability qualifies.
Free Muni. A San Francisco resident with a Clipper Access card and gross annual family income at or below 100% of the Bay Area median income can ride Muni free, cable cars included. Apply online or at the Customer Service Center, 11 South Van Ness Avenue; allow up to three weeks with an existing card, longer for a new one. The programme was extended through 2028. A transit citation issued within 30 days of enrolment can be dismissed.
