Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The office. The Saline County Veterans Service Office is in Wilber, phone 402-821-2990, [email protected], mailing address PO Box 865, Wilber, NE 68465. Its street address differs from source to source: the county's page gives 204 South High Street, the office's own nomination form 204 North High Street, and the State's directory (updated October 26, 2026) the courthouse, Room 100, 215 S. Court Street - so call before going. The page gives hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, "Open through the lunch hour"; the directory gives 8 to 5, closed 12 to 1. The Veterans Service Officer is Scott (Scottie) Davis, who "serves under the direction of the Veteran's Service Committee appointed by the Board of Commissioners" and offers "benefits, counseling and advocacy for a variety of Federal, State and County benefits". The committee. The county's page lists Alan Strouf, Fred Kozak, Ron Corbett, Bernard Hoesche and Lyle Bartels, with Commissioner Stephanie Krivohlavek attending; on December 23, 2025 the Board approved Roger Glenn and Ronald Cerveny as new members. The committee's posted minutes end in September 2021. Veteran of the Month. The office takes nominations on a one-page form - the veteran's name, address, phone, branch and dates of service, the nominator and relationship, and a narrative of the veteran's service - returned to the Veterans Office, and the officer presents the veteran to the Board: Michael Wittmuss on September 16, 2025 and Gary Heinemann on December 9, 2025 are the two in the minutes of the last year. The memorial. The Saline County Veterans' Memorial, built by a committee "to recognize all honorable discharged Veterans in Saline County and the surrounding area", was dedicated on November 11, 2011; the memorial committee (co-chairmen Ron Corbett and Lyle Bartels, treasurer Bernice Weber, PO Box 251, Dorchester) still takes donations for its maintenance, and Mr. Davis discussed "military memorial updates" with the Board on July 21, 2026. The county pays for upkeep from the office's budget: a "Veterans Memorial Maint & Repair" line spent $6,190.52 in 2023-2024 and $3,313.00 in 2024-2025, with $15,000 budgeted for 2025-2026. The money. The filed 2025-2026 budget gives the office $85,716.00 (the officer asked for $91,008), against $57,393.31 spent in 2024-2025, including $2,500 for grave markers and flags. The Clerk records a DD-214 brought to the office (see the Nebraska entry on the Discharge Record). Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries).
