What the office says it does. "The Veterans County Service Office assists veterans and their family members in obtaining federal and state benefits they have earned through their military service." It does not decide claims but "can assist in completing VA forms and other correspondence necessary in the claim or appeal process". The page lists VA compensation and pension (service-connected claims, DIC for survivors, pensions, aid and attendance and homebound benefits, medical expense reimbursements), VA health care, the specially adapted housing and automobile grants and the clothing allowance, burial allowances and headstones, government life insurance, the GI Bill, vocational rehabilitation and the Texas Hazelwood Act, VA and Veterans Land Board loans, recording DD-214s with the County Clerk and replacing records and medals, appeals and VA debt waivers, and property tax exemptions, civil service preference and special licence plates. It gives the VA clinic in San Angelo (325-658-6138) and the medical centre in Big Spring (1-800-472-1365). How the county funds it. The 2026-2027 budget's General Fund department 405, "Veteran's Service", is $12,200, as for 2026 (2025 actual $9,614.90): "Interlocal Tom Green VS" $8,000, travel and conference $3,600 and office expense $600. On September 22, 2026 (item 11) the Court entered into "an Interlocal Agreement between Runnels County and Tom Green County regarding administration of the budget for the office of the Veteran Service Officer", on Mr. Poehls's motion, carried unanimously. The agreement itself was not posted. TexVet. TexVet's county list names Sandra VanZant ([email protected]) at the office's number; the county's page and agendas name Troy Crosby.
