Rockland County Veterans Cemeteries (Loescher and Onderdonk)
Rockland County owns and runs two veterans cemeteries for eligible county veterans, their spouses and dependants: new burials go to the Frederick W. Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Brick Church Road, arranged through the funeral director with the Veterans Service Agency; families need proof of county residence and veteran status, and no plots are pre-reserved now.
Also called: veterans cemetery, burial, Loescher, Onderdonk, Brick Church Road, Rockland Community College, military honors, burial coordinator, urn burial, New City, Pomona, Nyack, Spring Valley, Suffern, Haverstraw.
For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.
"The Gary Onderdonk Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Rockland Community College and the Frederick W Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Brick Church Road are owned and operated by the County of Rockland for the burial of eligible Rockland County veterans, their spouses and eligible dependents. Both cemeteries are open daily from dawn until dusk. We are currently not accepting any new pre-reservations for plots. Families must provide proof of Rockland County residence and proof of veteran status prior to the burial."
How. "All new burials are at Loescher Cemetery under the general supervision of the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency. Your funeral director is able to handle all necessary approvals with the county as well as requesting military honors and applying for a military marker. If you wish to set up an urn burial without using a funeral home, please contact our office for further instructions." A DD-214 is needed for burial, honours, the headstone and the flag; the agency can send an emergency request to the National Archives. The Veterans Burial Coordinator, Jennifer Smith ([email protected]), helps with burials, plots, markers and burial and survivor benefits. Grave locations are searchable in the County Clerk's digital records ("veterans cemeteries" index).
The county's pages give no plot charge; ask the coordinator.
