Rockingham County's Veterans Treatment Court, coordinated by Chrissy Griffin, takes justice-involved veterans into a fourteen-month minimum programme with twice-weekly drug screens, court twice a month, daily check-ins, intensive probation supervision and a veteran mentor for each participant; the county established it in late 2024 and the Board funds its training.
Also called: veterans treatment court, VTC, treatment court, drug court, Chrissy Griffin, mentor, drug screen, probation, Judge Brandon, Wentworth, Reidsville, Eden, Madison, Mayodan, Stoneville.
The court is known from the Board's own records: the county site publishes no page for it, and the Judicial Branch's list of operating veterans treatment courts names Rockingham among the fifteen. Coordinator Chrissy Griffin's January 20, 2026 presentation to the Board: the mission "to create a support system to assist Justice Involved Veterans through the Criminal Justice System and to promote public safety through accountability and responsibility", holding justice-involved veterans accountable "while also addressing service-related challenges such as PTSD, Substance use, and mental health needs". The intent: improve public safety, reduce criminal recidivism, improve quality of veterans' lives, connect veterans with pre-existing services, reduce costs and return assets to the community.
The programme. Each participant volunteers for a minimum of fourteen months, with at least two drug screens a week, intensive supervision by probation, court two times a month, regular visits with providers, the coordinator and probation, and daily check-ins. Sanctions address noncompliance and incentives reward progress. Every participant is assigned a veteran mentor "to share the Military Culture and Brotherhood with" - eight trained mentors at the January 2026 presentation. Court assignments include writing where they see themselves in two years, identifying and handling triggers, apology letters and writing their own obituary. At the presentation the court had five participants, all attending court sessions and treatment, with first completions anticipated within the fourteen-month standard. Judge Brandon presides.
The Board's funding. The August 17, 2026 Board meeting unanimously appropriated $5,450 to the Veterans Treatment Court staff-training line item, "the Veteran's Treatment Court training event was budgeted in FY 2026." The court was described in January 2026 as "operational for a little over a year". Referral routes the county does not publish; the Veterans Service Office (336-342-8449) and the coordinator are the first asks.
