Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Roanoke County charges an annual vehicle license fee of $20, $25 for a vehicle of 4,001 pounds or more, and $15 for a motorcycle, under section 12-28 of the County Code. Section 12-28(e) exempts one passenger vehicle, pickup, or panel truck owned by an honorably discharged former prisoner of war, a Medal of Honor recipient, or "any disabled veteran". The Commissioner of the Revenue decides eligibility on the criteria DMV uses for the matching special plates, and DMV issues Disabled Veteran plates for a VA-certified service-connected disability at any rating. That is wider than the state mandate in section 46.2-755(B), which covers only a veteran who already has the DMV disabled veteran fee exemption and the plates. Section 12-28(d) halves the fee for a member of the Virginia National Guard on a vehicle with National Guard plates.
