Roanoke County freezes the real estate tax of a permanently and totally disabled owner with income up to $60,000 and net worth up to $200,000.

Also called: tax freeze, tax relief, property tax, elderly and disabled, income limit.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Roanoke County's relief for older and disabled owners is a freeze of the real estate tax, administered by the Commissioner of the Revenue, for an owner who is 65 or older, or permanently and totally disabled. A home jointly held by spouses qualifies if either qualifies. Since January 1, 2025, gross combined income of the owners and relatives living there cannot exceed $60,000, excluding the first $10,000 of each relative's income other than a spouse or owner. Net worth of the owners and spouse cannot exceed $200,000, excluding the home and up to one acre. Filing runs from January 1 to March 15 each year. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use it.
