Rapides Parish Assessor: Disabled Veteran Exemption and Special Assessment Level
The Rapides Parish Assessor quotes the constitutional text itself: the next $7,500 of assessed value on a home owned and occupied by a veteran with a 100% VA rating is exempt, the surviving spouse stays eligible whether or not the exemption was in effect before death, and tax applies to any assessed value over $15,000.
Also called: property tax, assessor, homestead exemption, special assessment level, Form A25, veteran exemption.
The exemption is the State's, under La. Const. art. VII, section 21, as the State entries explain. The Rapides Parish Assessor, Richard I. "Rick" Ducote, Jr. (chief deputy Caroline D. Simons), quotes the operative text on its own FAQ.
The additional exemption. Article VII, section 21(K)(1) provides that in addition to the homestead exemption, the next seven thousand five hundred dollars of the assessed valuation of property receiving the homestead exemption which is owned and occupied by a veteran with a service-connected disability rating of one hundred percent from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs is exempt from ad valorem taxation. If property eligible for the exemption has an assessed value in excess of fifteen thousand dollars, ad valorem property taxes apply to the assessment in excess of fifteen thousand dollars.
Surviving spouse. The surviving spouse of a deceased veteran with a 100 percent rating remains eligible if the spouse occupies and remains the owner of the property, whether or not the exemption was in effect on the property prior to the veteran's death.
How to file. The disabled veteran must currently own and reside in the property and have the 100 percent rating verified by VA; a surviving spouse must currently own and reside in the property, and the veteran must have qualified before death. Visit the office to apply.
