Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Raleigh County has no county veterans service office; the veterans service function is the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance's Beckley Benefit Office, which is in the county: 109 Randolph Street, Beckley, WV 25801, phone (304) 256-6955, fax (304) 250-6536. Its service officers are Cheryl Farrell and Steve Moore, with veterans service officer assistant Samantha Farrell, serving Fayette and Raleigh Counties. The department's services are free to the veteran. Discharge papers. County Clerk Scott Van Meter's office at the courthouse, 215 Main Street, Beckley, (304) 255-9123, records discharges: the clerk's own duties list names "DD214's". Recording is free - Code 7-1-3LL requires the clerk to record "upon presentation, free of charge" the discharge certificate or DD-214, kept "in a secure manner, rendering the records unavailable to the public", with a public Military Discharge Index. The clerk publishes a request form for certified copies, revised March 2025, which asks for photo identification, warns that a false application is a felony under state and federal law, is processed in "2-3 business days", and can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to the clerk at 215 Main Street. The county's money reaches veterans work occasionally: the commission approved a $2,000 grant to Thornwood Trout Unlimited "for Veterans Fishing Retreat" on April 14, 2026, and its September 1, 2026 agenda carried recognitions of Pauline Haga "for her distinguished service to Veterans and Military Families" and of Earnestine Phillips, a retired Navy nurse. Homestead exemption appeals land here too: in June 2026 the commission upheld the assessor's denial of one, which is the county's role if an exemption application is refused. The stand-alone court. Raleigh County is the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit, and the Raleigh County Veterans Treatment Court is West Virginia's only stand-alone veterans treatment court - see the county's veterans treatment court entry.
