Also called: car tax, personal property, vehicle tax, Prince William car tax, license fee, TDIU.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Prince William applies the statewide one-vehicle exemption on the same application as the real estate exemption. One automobile or pickup truck owned by the veteran, the spouse, or both, and used primarily by or for the veteran, is exempt from the county personal property tax. Leased vehicles and motorcycles do not qualify. The documentation rule is the same as for the home: a VA letter showing a disability that is service-connected, 100% or compensated at the 100% rate, permanent, and total. The yearly recertification form asks the veteran to confirm the vehicle or name a new one. The county vehicle license fee is $33.00 a year for a car or truck. The county's 2026 brochure says a qualifying disabled veteran gets relief from that fee on the exempt vehicle. The county code reaches it through section 13-82, which exempts any vehicle that section 46.2-755 of the Code of Virginia exempts: one vehicle of a veteran who holds Disabled Veteran plates and the DMV disabled veteran exemption. Section 13-82 does not adopt the wider local options in section 46.2-752, so a veteran who qualifies for the plates at a lower rating, or who kept a standard plate, should expect the fee and ask the office if the brochure is read otherwise. A resident of a town inside the county deals with the town for any town license fee. Prince William's 2026 rate table has no separate class for the vehicle of a veteran who has lost, or lost the use of, a leg, arm, or hand, is blind, or is certified permanently and totally disabled under Code section 58.1-3506(A)(19). Fairfax taxes that class at $0.01 per $100 and Loudoun at $0.00. In Prince William a veteran in that class who does not meet the 100% test pays the ordinary vehicle rate, $3.50 per $100 of assessed value in 2026, less the state car-tax relief.
