Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Prince William's elderly and disabled program, in chapter 26, article V of the county code, relieves all or part of the real estate tax, the solid waste fee, and the personal property tax and license fee on one vehicle for a resident who is 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled. Permanently and totally disabled means unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity because of an impairment expected to last for life or end in death. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected. A disabled veteran who does not qualify for the service-connected exemption can use this program. For 2026, total income from all sources in 2025 cannot exceed $123,903. The first $10,000 of a relative's income, other than an owner or spouse, is excluded, and the first $7,500 of a disabled applicant's permanent disability compensation is excluded. Net worth of the applicant and spouse cannot exceed $400,000, excluding the home and up to 25 acres. Real estate relief covers the home and up to one acre: $0 to $85,450: 100% exempt. $85,451 to $98,268: 75%. $98,269 to $111,085: 50%. $111,086 to $123,903: 25%. Vehicle and solid waste relief use the same income and net-worth limits, and the applicant does not need to own real estate for vehicle relief. Leased vehicles and motorcycles do not qualify. From January 1, 2026, a home jointly owned with someone who is not 65 or disabled gets prorated relief when every owner lives there. Applications are due April 15, 2026, and every year after that on a renewal. The county code accepts a disability certification from the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, or the Railroad Retirement Board, or two physicians' affidavits. The county's 2026 brochure lists only Social Security, the Railroad Retirement Board, or two physicians. A veteran can file the VA certification and cite section 26-41(e) of the county code.
