Prince George County Reduced Vehicle Tax Rate for Certain Disabled Veterans

Prince George County’s code taxes one vehicle of a veteran with limb loss, blindness, or a permanent and total service-connected disability at a reduced rate, $2.13 per $100 on the 2026 application against $3.90. The county’s page and application offer it only to a veteran rated 100%, who is already fully exempt.

Also called: car tax, reduced rate, personal property, amputee, blind, Prince George car tax.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Section 74-434(a) of the Prince George County Code makes one motor vehicle owned, or leased with the tax passed to the veteran, and regularly used by a disabled veteran a separate class under Code of Virginia section 58.1-3506(A)(19). That section is a list of alternatives: a veteran who "has either lost, or lost the use of, one or both legs, or an arm or a hand, or who is blind or who is permanently and totally disabled as certified by the Department of Veterans Services". Limb loss or blindness qualifies at any rating, and the permanent and total route names no percentage. By January 31 each year the veteran gives the Commissioner of the Revenue the DVS certification and a personal certification, with the vehicle identification number, that he or she regularly used the vehicle the year before. The county's 2026 application sets the class rate at $2.13 per $100 of assessed value; the county's tax rate page and its disabled veterans page still show $1.95, the page calling it "the approved rate for 2023". The ordinary personal property rate is $3.90. The county's page and application then limit the reduced rate to a veteran certified by VA "to have a 100% service-connected, permanent and total disability, or 100% by means of individual un-employability". That is the test for the full exemption in section 58.1-3668, which the same veteran can take instead; section 74-434(d) lets a veteran have one or the other on a single vehicle, not both. As the county describes it, the reduced rate goes only to people who are better off taking the exemption. The veteran it was written for, one with an amputation or blindness rated below 100%, should apply for the reduced rate with the DVS certification and cite section 74-434(a) and section 58.1-3506(A)(19). The application also asks for a military ID and a Virginia driver's license.
