Prince George County Vehicle Tax for Active Duty Members and Spouses
Prince George County exempts vehicles of nonresident active-duty members, and of their spouses under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act, on a January LES each year, and does not tax a vehicle kept on Fort Gregg-Adams. The county ended its vehicle license fee in 2022.
Also called: active duty, SCRA, MSRRA, military spouse, Fort Lee, Fort Gregg-Adams, car tax, LES.
Prince George County is home to Fort Gregg-Adams, and the Commissioner of the Revenue's active duty page sets out how the county applies the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. An active-duty member living in the county whose legal residence is another state does not pay county personal property tax on his or her vehicles, and a spouse whose legal residence is the same state as the member's, present only to be with the member under orders, gets the same exemption under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act on a notarized military spouse affidavit. A vehicle may be co-owned with the member or owned by the spouse alone. The county asks for a January leave and earnings statement every year and mails reminders in January. A leased vehicle gets the state's car tax relief on the first $20,000 of value. On retirement the member sends a DD-214 and becomes liable for the tax until the vehicle leaves Virginia.
The page says a vehicle kept on the post, which it still calls Fort Lee, is not taxed because the post is under exclusive federal jurisdiction; a resident billed for one sends a copy of the on-post lease and updates the DMV address.
The page still describes a county license fee exemption for active-duty members, including those domiciled in Virginia. Section 78-100 of the county code eliminated the vehicle license fee from the 2022 tax year, so there is no county fee to exempt.
