For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Article 4G(a) of Ley 203-2007 gives veterans, their spouses and their minor or incapacitated children the right to a ten percent discount on the individual rate charged when they visit or request services in areas belonging to the National Parks, "tales como balnearios, zoológicos, acuarios, centros vacacionales, áreas de acampar, así como cualquier otro lugar recreativo." The list is illustrative rather than exhaustive: it ends with "any other recreational place," so a facility not named is not automatically outside it. The transfer clause is the useful part for families. The benefit is transferable to the surviving spouse and to minor or incapacitated children on the veteran's death, which puts it alongside the Article 6 rule that continues the Act's privileges for the family. Subsection (b) adds that veterans have the right to whatever discounts or preferential rates are available at any other recreational or cultural facilities, and authorises the Procurador del Veterano to negotiate such benefits as provided by law. So the ten percent is a statutory floor for the named public facilities, and the Procurador is the office that arranges anything beyond it. Ask the Procurador what is currently negotiated rather than assuming the ten percent is all there is. Two practical notes. The discount is on the individual rate, so a family visiting together should expect it to apply per eligible person rather than to the whole party's bill. And proof of status will be asked for: under Article 5 a driver's licence with the veteran designation is accepted evidence, which is easier to carry than a DD214. Nothing here turns on a disability rating. Puerto Rico also has federal recreation benefits that are larger than this and are separate from it. The Interagency Access Pass gives free lifetime entry to federal recreation sites for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a permanent disability, and the Military Lifetime Pass covers Gold Star families and veterans at federal sites. Those are administered federally; this article is the Commonwealth's own.
