Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

In Powhatan County the Commissioner of the Revenue, James B. Timberlake II, at 3834 Old Buckingham Road, Suite C (804-598-5616), takes the statewide disabled-veteran real estate exemption. There is no income test and no net-worth test. The county's "Veteran Real Estate Tax Exemption Application" asks for a certificate or letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs showing a 100% service-related disability, and its office-use block computes the relief from "Land Value (1 Acre)" and building value. Acreage. The exemption covers the qualifying dwelling and one acre. Section 58.1-3219.5(C) of the Code of Virginia sets one acre as the default and requires more only where the county's own relief reaches more; Powhatan's own tax relief for the elderly and disabled covers a dwelling and land not exceeding one acre (section 70-52(b) of the county code), so one acre is the statutory match, and the application form agrees. What it is worth. The 2026 real estate rate is $0.77 per $100 of assessed value, up two cents from $0.75 in 2025. The Board fixed the rate by Resolution R-2026-24 on April 6, 2026, on a 3-2 vote after a motion for 73 cents failed, and the April 27, 2026 minutes record the $0.77 rate alongside the FY2026-2027 budget adopted by Ordinance O-2026-07. Taxes are billed in two halves, due June 5 and November 5 (the 2026 second-half bills were mailed October 1, 2026), with a one-time 10% penalty after the deadline and 10% a year interest from the first of the following month. A veteran rated permanent and total on the basis of individual unemployability qualifies; the county's page does not mention it, and the Department of Veterans Services treats that rating as qualifying.
