Portland Veterans’ Property Tax Exemptions

Portland’s assessor publishes a 2026 veteran benefit matrix printing the wartime exemption at $1,000 or more with revaluation, the state additional at twice the basic at the 2026 income limits, the D-2 dwelling exemption, and a 12-81f local option of up to $10,000 or 10 percent adopted by the selectmen in 2007.

Also called: property tax, 12-81g, veterans exemption, assessor, Portland.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

The assessor’s exemptions page links a “Connecticut Statutory & Local Option Veteran Exemptions” matrix dated October 7, 2026. It prints the basic wartime exemption at $1,000 “or more if increased due to revaluation”; the 12-81g(a),(d) income-based additional at twice the basic for income at or below the threshold - for the 2026 calendar year, $46,300 for single and $56,500 for married, based on 2025 income - and 50 percent above it; and the 12-81(83) dwelling exemption in full, not land or outbuildings, with the annual D-2 application by January 1. The matrix checks one municipal option: 12-81f(a), “Up to $10,000 or 10% of assessed value.” The local option’s application states it rests on “GCS Sec. 12-81f (a) Portland BOS 2/28/2007” and is filed biennially, February 2 to October 1. The exemptions page also links the assessor’s Active Military AOA form, the motor vehicle property tax exemption application for active duty members of the armed forces under 12-81(53), a new application filed annually. OLR’s 2023 survey recorded Portland as offering none of the municipal options, which disagrees with the 2007 Board of Selectmen adoption the matrix and application print; ask the assessor which applies. Portland’s code of ordinances on Municode carries no veterans’ section - its taxation chapter’s only vehicle exemption, § 18-5 (Ord. of 9-23-1998), restates 12-81C’s ambulance and retrofitted-handicapped-vehicle exemption.

Figures

Each figure is dated with the day it was read. A local figure moves whenever the statute or the local ordinance does, so confirm it with the office that grants it before you rely on it. Statute verified gives the day the weekly section check last found the statute standing on the legislature’s own code site; a figure without it rests on a statute the check does not read yet.
