The Veterans' Service Officer is Kenneth D. Toline, with assistant Brenda Toline. The county page gives hours of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.; the State's directory (updated October 26, 2026) gives Wednesday only, 9 a.m. to noon. The office serves under the Veterans' Service Committee the Board of Commissioners appoints, and the county pays Masonic Lodge No. 65 $250 a month for the building. What it lists. County benefits: the County Veterans' Aid Fund "To meet immediate emergency financial needs" (see that entry) and flag holders "For placement on the grave of every veteran buried in Polk County". The office also files for the State's aid fund, tuition waiver, discharge replacement, grave registration and Veterans' Home admission, and for federal compensation, pension, education, insurance, burial, home loans, health care and long-term nursing home care. The Board's year. The Board reappointed Milton Toy (August 5, 2025) and appointed John Pokorney (August 19, 2025) to the Veterans Service Committee. On August 19, 2025 Mr. Toline and the committee reported that the number of veterans and families seen "remains high"; the committee recommended remodelling the leased Masonic Lodge building for privacy during appointments, and the Board gave the officer, hired without benefits, prorated vacation and sick leave. On November 4, 2025 it signed the Nebraska Department of Veterans' Affairs' memorandum for VetraSpec; on June 2, 2026 it heard that the Lodge would remodel the bathroom and replace the flooring at its own cost; and on June 23, 2026 it added $21,500.00 to the office budget from the miscellaneous budget "to cover an increased need for salaries". On September 1, 2026 Mr. Toline, his assistant and the committee brought a succession plan: a candidate certified by the Director of Veterans Affairs under sections 80-407 and 80-410 would train and earn her accreditations while employed by the county, and Mr. Toline would then retire; the Board offered the "in training" position to Kasie Leeling, 3-0. The money. The office (0100-803) spent $50,817.37 in 2023-2024 and $80,247.10 in 2024-2025, and the 2025-2026 budget adopted $86,000.00 (the officer's $50,000.00, $26,000.00 of part-time clerical salary and $3,000.00 of office rent) before the June 2026 increase.
