Polk County Property Appraiser: Veteran Exemptions
How the Polk County Property Appraiser's September 2026 guide describes Florida's veteran exemptions. It reads the $5,000 exemption to cover a disability that "does not have to be service connected", but describes the combat discount as for a veteran who is partially disabled, where the statute says partially or totally; the wheelchair exemption without its adapted housing condition; and the deployment exemption as for deployments outside the United States.
Also called: property tax, property appraiser, Polk PA, 196.081, 196.091, 196.24, 196.082, 196.173, DR-501DV, DR-501M, March 1.
The exemptions are the State's; the Florida entries explain them. The Polk County Property Appraiser grants them; its guide "Do You Qualify" was revised in September 2026.
The non-service-connected route. For the $5,000 exemption the guide requires a disability of 10% or more "by misfortune (does not have to be service connected) or while serving during a period of wartime service", proven by a federal or VA letter, with no homestead required. Like Palm Beach County's Appraiser, and unlike Broward's, it reads section 196.24's "misfortune" to reach a disability VA has not service-connected.
Where the guide is narrower than the statutes.
The combat discount. The guide asks that the veteran "be partially disabled with a permanent service-connected disability, at least part of which is combat-related". Section 196.082(1) covers a veteran "partially or totally permanently disabled", so a 100% combat-related veteran who is not otherwise fully exempt qualifies. The guide does set the discount correctly at the whole permanent rating.
The wheelchair exemption. The guide describes a veteran "confined to a wheelchair as a result of military service". Section 196.091 also requires a service-connected total disability and VA specially adapted housing assistance; see the Florida entry.
The deployment exemption. The guide requires deployment "outside the United States". Section 196.173 says outside the continental United States, Alaska or Hawaii, in support of a named operation; see the Florida entry for the operations added in 2026. It correctly includes former members.
The $5,000 exemption for a surviving spouse. The guide says it carries over until the spouse "sells, or no longer resides on property" and "does not transfer to new homestead residence". Section 196.24 entitles the unremarried surviving spouse to $5,000 of property in his or her own right, not tied to one homestead.
The guide does describe the total and permanent exemption's carry-over and transfer, and the prorated refund on a new home, as section 196.081 provides.

10% for the $5,000 exemption; permanent and total for the full one
The $5,000 exemption starts at 10%, service connected or, on the Appraiser's reading, not. The full homestead exemption needs total and permanent disability. The combat discount needs age 65 and a permanent rating with a combat-related part.
