Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

Pittsylvania County charges a license fee of $40.75 a year on a passenger vehicle or pickup and $28.75 on a motorcycle garaged in the county outside the incorporated towns, which charge their own. Section 9-46(F) of the county code exempts "any vehicle personally owned or leased, in whole or in part, by a member of the armed services of the United States on active duty", and defines that service to include "the National Guard or other reserve component". Section 9-50(H) halves the fee on a car or pickup of a National Guard member who has the state's Guard license plates. The county's vehicle license fee page also says a car or pickup "owned and used personally by a Disabled Veteran or Prisoner of War and currently running state license plates to identify them as such" is exempt with proper documentation. For the Disabled Veteran plates that is the state's rule in section 46.2-755(B). The prisoner of war waiver is the county's own practice; the county code does not name it.
