Pittsylvania County Real Estate Tax Relief for Permanent and Total Disability
Pittsylvania County relieves up to $600 of real estate tax for a permanently and totally disabled owner with household income up to $35,000 and net worth up to $70,000. One county page still prints older limits of $25,000, $65,000, and $450.
Also called: tax relief, property tax, elderly and disabled, income limit.
Section 6-6 of the Pittsylvania County Code relieves real estate tax on the home and up to one acre, including a mobile home, of an owner who is 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled, meaning unable to engage in any substantially gainful activity because of an impairment expected to last for life or end in death. Combined income of the owners and others living in the home cannot exceed $35,000, with the first $4,000 of each relative or other occupant other than a spouse left out, and net worth cannot exceed $70,000, excluding the home and one acre. Relief is 100% of the tax up to $25,400 of income, falling by 10 points for each $1,200 of income to 20% at $35,000, and never more than $600 a year. An owner under 65 attaches a certification from the Social Security Administration, "the Veterans Administration", or the Railroad Retirement Board, or two doctors' affidavits. File every year between January 1 and February 15.
The county's "Elderly & Disabled Tax Relief" page gives the same $35,000, $70,000, and $600 figures. Its separate "Tax Relief" page still prints $25,000 of income, $65,000 of net worth, and a $450 maximum. The code and the first page are current. It is not a VA rating of 100% service-connected, and a disabled veteran who does not meet that test can use it.
