Why file, and the records. "Why is it important to file your DD214? Recording your DD214 will give you an additional location to obtain a copy if the original is misplaced or destroyed. This is your evidence of active military service and it is often required as proof for different types of benefits." The records: "All Veterans from 1950 to present time have a DD214 issued; Those who served during WWII do not possess a DD214, their document is known as a Discharge/Separation paper issued between 1941 - 1946 War Department Document No 55-53." The benefits: "You will always have access to a FREE certified true copy of your DD-214. Your survivors will know where to obtain access to a FREE certified copy to leverage benefits at the time of a veteran's death."
The closure and the archive. "The records are confidential and can only be viewed by the Veteran or next of kin with proper identification. The code section is OCGA 15-6-72 to view who can view these records. DD214 should be recorded in the county which Veterans reside." And: "If you have misplaced these documents and/or they were never recorded at your local courthouse certified copies can be obtained by contacting the National Archives and Records Administration."
