Pershing County Recorder-Auditor: Recording Military Discharge Papers

The Pershing County Recorder-Auditor records real estate, mining claims, contracts, leases, judgments and marriage certificates under Nevada law, and its pages publish no military-discharge line or fee schedule, so free recording rests on NRS 419.020.

Also called: DD-214, DD214, recorder-auditor, discharge papers, NRS 419.020, NRS 247.110, Lovelock, mining claims.

For: Veteran or service member.

Where it applies

Written for the jurisdictions listed here.

NRS 419.020 requires every county recorder to record a certificate of honorable discharge "free of any charge therefor"; see the Nevada entry. The Pershing County Recorder-Auditor's Office in Lovelock "is responsible for the recordation, scanning/microfilming, indexing and permanent storage of all Real Estate Transactions, Mining Claim Locations, Assessment work, Contracts, Leases, Judgments, Marriage Certific[ates]" and the rest of its statutory record, and describes itself as pledged to "accurate, legible and easily retrievable records". What the pages do not say. The office's pages publish no discharge line, no fee schedule and no statement of the free rule, so a veteran asked to pay for recording an honorable discharge should cite NRS 419.020, and ask the office how a recorded DD-214 is indexed. Recorded documents in Nevada are generally open to public inspection; recording a discharge is always optional.
