The office. The Perkins County Veterans Service Office is in the courthouse, 200 Lincoln Avenue, Grant, NE 69140 (mail PO Box 475), phone (308) 352-7590, fax (308) 352-7592, [email protected], open Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed over the lunch hour. The county's page says the office "assists veterans and their dependents in obtaining information about any V.A. benefits", works up applications and supporting documents, and helps veterans apply for VA medical center eligibility. Its County Benefits page lists county veterans aid (see that entry), a bronze grave flag holder (inventoried each year and replaced when damaged), registration of DD-214s, homestead help, grave registration with a Presidential Memorial Certificate, and benefits counselling. How the office was filled. The Board's January 6, 2025 appointments left the Veteran's Service Officer line blank. Through February and March 2025 Phil Calkins and members of the Perkins County Veteran Service Board pressed the Board about the vacancy, while the Board looked at sharing an officer: Chase County's Veterans Service Board declined an interlocal agreement (March 17, 2025), the Board then pursued one with Keith County, and on April 7, 2025 it advertised the post instead. On June 16, 2025, on the Veterans Service Board's recommendation, it hired Kim Dickmeyer as full-time Veterans Service Officer at $26.00 an hour, and it re-appointed her among its 2026 appointments on January 20, 2026, with a $40.00 monthly phone allowance and Ken Potts appointed to the Veterans Service Board to 2031. The Board's year. The Board approved the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs' memorandum of understanding on November 3, 2025 and held the Tyler Technologies memorandum until a missing exhibit arrived. On February 2, 2026, after Ms. Dickmeyer met with it about LB 1072, it voted 3-0 to send letters to Senators Jacobsen and Ibach "opposing LB1072 and the transfer of Nebraska Veterans' Aid Funds to the Department of Veterans' Affairs Cash Fund." Homestead certification. The Assessor's homestead FAQ, under "How do I qualify as a Disabled Veteran or their Widow?", lists the exemptions for a veteran totally disabled by a non-service-connected illness or accident, each "(annual certification required)", and sends the veteran to the Veterans Service Office first for a physician's form and the office's certification. The application under section 77-3508 is annual, but 77-3508(1)(c) says the medical certification need not be repeated when the condition has not changed, though the assessor may ask for it again (see the Nebraska entries). The money. The office (0100-803) spent $33,914.79 in 2023-2024 and $15,185.69 in the vacancy year 2024-2025, and the 2025-2026 budget adopts $56,500.00, the officer's $47,320.00 salary among it.
