Pawnee County Veterans Aid Fund

Pawnee County’s section 80-102 Vets Aid fund is kept at $4,100 by refilling it from the general fund with whatever it paid the year before; it paid a veteran’s propane and electric bills, $657.86, in November 2025; the county’s page still asks for wartime service and an honorable discharge, tests the 2024 amendment removed.

Also called: Vets Aid, county veterans aid, CVA, fund 1900, 80-102, emergency aid, utilities, wartime era, Pawnee City, Table Rock, Burchard, Du Bois, Steinauer, Lewiston.

For: Veteran or service member, spouse, child, survivor.

What the page says. Pawnee County's County Benefits page calls the CVA fund "a temporary emergency fund to assist veterans, their spouses, and dependents when there is an unforeseen emergency and there are no other resources available", for food, shelter, clothing, funeral, medical, dental and surgical items, applied for through the Veterans Service Office, where the veteran "must demonstrate an 'inability'" to pay. The test it prints is out of date. The page limits the fund to veterans who "received an Honorable Discharge, and served during one of the defined 'wartime eras'". LB1300 (Laws 2024, section 45) struck the wartime-service test from section 80-102, which now reaches a veteran discharged honorable or general (under honorable conditions), or who died in service, who has lived a year in Nebraska and six months in the county, and a spouse, surviving spouse or minor child in need. A peacetime veteran, or one with a general discharge, should apply anyway. How the fund works. The filed 2025-2026 budget's Vets Aid fund (1900) held $3,886.64 on July 1, 2023 and paid $258.00 of utilities in 2023-2024; a $258.00 transfer from the general fund in 2024-2025, a year with no aid paid, brought it back to $4,100.00 on July 1, 2025. The 2025-2026 budget makes the $4,100.00 available: $1,200.00 for utilities, $900.00 for rent and provisions and $2,000.00 for medical client services. On November 12, 2025 the Board held back a claim "presented for veterans assistance per review" while Mr. Duff discussed aid with it in closed session, and on November 25, 2025, after a second closed session, it paid veteran services aid claims to State Line Propane ($225.98) and OPPD ($431.88). On September 29, 2026 the Board passed Resolution 26-20 to transfer $657.86 from the general fund to the Veteran's Aid Fund, the same sum. How to apply. Through the Veterans Service Office, (402) 852-2777, weekday mornings (see that entry). See the Nebraska entry on the county fund for the committee's discretion and the State's own aid fund.
